Our 14-day voyage takes place during the Antarctic summer when wildlife (especially penguins) is at its greatest extent and the pack ice has broken up allowing our ship, MV Polar Star, access to rarely visited bays and beaches. Fin, humpback and killer whales have arrived into sheltered waters and the weather tends to be stable compared to Antarctica’s spring and fall. Quite simply…it is the best time to experience all the wonders of the South.
Fathom Expeditions has hand-crafted this particular voyage to include one of the most comprehensive itineraries possible. The journey includes 8 full days in Antarctica proper and it covers all three sides of the Peninsula Region. The trip is designed using our teams’ previous 100+ journeys to this amazing continent and the itinerary features the very best history and wildlife stops along with modern explorations and walking and hiking opportunities. Photography is an integral part of the journey and the special and varied nature of our programs cater to all abilities and ages.
The areas we plan to visit include Elephant Island, the Weddell Sea, Antarctic Sound, Snowhill Island, the Danco Coast, the South Shetland Islands, Paradise Bay, the Lemaire Channel, Port Lockroy, Deception Island, Erebus and Terror Gulf and much more.
The ice ship MV POLAR STAR is an ideal ship with a fantastic combination of comfort and amenities for this type of adventure. She is recognized as one of the world’s most stable and comfortable icebreakers combining superior strength with state-or-the-art systems and first-rate comforts. The ship is stocked with exceptional food, wine and spirits to complement our grand Antarctic journey. Each day we use a fleet of 10 Zodiac boats to their full potential to visit remote islands and beaches. For some it will be enjoying a relaxing time amid a million penguins; for others, it will be an eye-to-eye encounter with a humpback whale; for others, it will be to walk or hike to the top of one of Antarctica's remote volcanoes.
Whether you wish to spend hours silently observing penguins or to feel the experience of being a modern explorer, this expedition has many unparalleled opportunities for the veteran and novice traveller.
Please give us a call for details on programs, or to simply chat about your interest in Antarctica. Our field experts are standing by to share their enthusiasm. Onward to the ice!
