Wandering Albatross

Wilderness Tours

Imagine sitting peacefully amongst 120,000 three-foot high King penguins. Watching their day-to-day activities as an adult springs from the sea and enters the throng in search of a solitary hungry chick. Better yet, place yourself on Albatross Island, South Georgia, one of the few places on earth where one can see the nesting Wandering Albatross, birds with a ten-foot wingspan. In the Antarctic Peninsula, seabirds including penguins are ubiquitous filling the water and the shores as they breed during the Austral Summer. Many of our daily shore excursions land at breeding grounds for Chinstap, Gentoo, and Adelie Penguins. These birds show very little fear of humans and congregate in unfathomable numbers. Our expedition ornithologists will describe the aviary wildlife in detail during presentations and wildlife watches aboard the ship. While on shore, they will interpret the behaviors and breeding cycles of all the bird indigenous to this south world. Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands represent a rare and wonderful opportunity to see some of the most impressive gatherings of bird life on the planet. It is no wonder these areas are referred to as the Galapagos of the South.
