A colony of 4,000 breeding pairs of emperor penguins has recently been discovered in the Weddell Sea within close proximity of the Antarctic Peninsula. Reachable only by icebreaker and helicopter, the Snow Hill Island emperor colony is a fantastic opportunity for naturalists and photographers. We are proud and excited to present this first-ever voyage - especially at such a competitive rate! This trip is a true Antarctic exploration (but with some nice comforts, too).

Depending on weather, ice and helicopter flying conditions, we are hoping to spend four days with emperor penguins — the entire area in Antarctica is astounding and guided side trips will head off for hiking and photography from above. We’ll also attempt to explore the location where the emperors are coming and going between the ice and the sea. Some of the trip photography outings will take place at dawn and dusk to capture Antarctica’s moments in the right light. Exploring Antarctic Sound’s Adelie colonies is another exciting addition to the itinerary.

The Weddell Sea by icebreaker in the Antarctic spring includes sailing pristine waters through icebergs the size of city blocks - vast behemoths that dwarf our ship despite showing only one tenth of their mass above water. “Ever south” we travel, snaking past ice floes and rugged islands. Whales appear. The Antarctic explorers referred to this water as a “sea of blows”. Our expedition will be retracing several explorer routes on the journey including our good friend, Sir E. Shackleton and Nordenskjold. Expedition historians recount the tales and, south of Snow Hill Island, we head out via helicopter for our days on the Antarctic ice with the emperors of Antarctica.
