The ice-rated expedition ship, Molchanov was built in Finland in 1982-83 for polar and oceanographic research and She carries a maximum of 48 passengers in comfortable outside-facing cabins. With an ice-strengthened hull, a 4.5 meter draft and fully stabilized, She is able to navigate some of Antarctica’s most amazing areas where many other vessels cannot venture. Fathom Expeditions spent one month aboard Her in 2003 sailing to the Falklands, South Georgia and the Antarctic with a working replica of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s lifeboat, the James Caird. Molchanov was the perfect, small and personable expedition ship for our tour and we look forward to more incredible times with our group of just 48 expeditioners.
The atmosphere onboard is similar to our Arctic programs. Informal, relaxed and entertaining is the norm. We are rarely on the ship once in Antarctic proper but for crossings and relaxed evening cruises, the ship has a library, a polar bar, two dining rooms, a large open bridge where clients are welcome 24-7, an incredible Finnish sauna and loads of deck space for viewing whales, albatrosses and icebergs.
With a fleet of Mark 5 zodiac landing boats, Molchanov is equipped to take our group ashore in minutes allowing us bonus landings on remote sites. The ship’s shallow draft gives us added advantage navigating narrow passages and fjords. The experienced Captain, crew and expedition team are veterans in Antarctic waters and understand the weather. All told, our ship is the perfect platform for an exciting and grand journey into the heart of the Antarctica. We hope you will enjoy this custom cruise.
