*Spirit of Shackleton was voted the best Antarctic trip in the world by National Geographic Adventure - 2003.
This special 13-night voyage takes place in the height of the Antarctic summer when the wildlife (especially penguins) is at its greatest extent and the pack ice has broken up allowing our ship, MV Explorer, access to rarely visited bays and beaches. Fin, humpback and killer whales have arrived into sheltered waters and the weather tends to be stable compared to Antarctica’s spring and fall. Quite simply…it is the best time to experience all the wonders of the South.
Fathom Expeditions has custom-built the Spirit of Shackleton trip programs and itinerary to make this an unforgettable classic: a long comprehensive voyage featuring all the very best stops and explorations on the Antarctic Peninsula and surrounding islands.
Together, our guides have led over 110 previous Antarctic expeditions on land and by sea. You can be certain this extensive experience has gone towards ensuring Spirit of Shackleton is the ultimate Antarctic trip. Two or three landings per day, visits to both the North and South sections of the peninsula, one of the world’s most accomplished Antarctic lecture teams, special photography and walking/hiking opportunities all contribute to make this voyage unique and special. Activities are optional and cater to all ages and abilities. Fathom Expeditions’ replica of Shackleton’s lifeboat will join us onboard as we cruise in the footsteps of the great explorers.
The areas we plan to visit include Elephant Island, the Weddell Sea, Antarctic Sound, Snowhill Island, the Danco Coast, the South Shetland Islands, Paradise Bay, the Lemaire Channel, Port Lockroy, Deception Island, Erebus and Terror Gulf and much more.
The ice ship MV EXPLORER is the perfect ship for this type of adventure. She was built specifically for the polar regions and carries us in comfort through this trail of history and wonder. Each day we use our fleet of Zodiac boats to their full potential, for both planned and spontaneous landings to visit remote islands and beaches. Custom programs ensure Antarctic dreams are actualized. For some it will be enjoying a sail in the James Caird lifeboat. For others, it will be an eye-to-eye encounter with a humpback whale, and for others still, it will be to walk/hike/or climb one of Antarctica's remote volcanoes.
Whether you wish to spend hours silently observing the purposeful movements of penguins or to feel the experience of being a modern explorer, this expedition has many unparalleled opportunities.
Throughout the journey, our lecture team will lead informal presentations that engage us with tales of wildlife, science and nature, all to provide insight into the surrounding environment. The expedition is an ideal balance of relaxation and active exploration, adventure and comfort, education and experience. Top that off with culinary delights and fine wines to ensure warmth and smiles at the end of the day. This is sure to be a journey of a lifetime with some of the industry's most accomplished guides.
